Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Institute of Reading Development?
The Institute of Reading Development is a nationwide leader in reading skills programs. Since 1970, we’ve been dedicated to teaching the right reading skills and providing our students with great experiences in great books. Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love of reading in every student. You can learn more about our story here.
Do I need a teaching degree or certificate to teach these programs?
We do not require our summer teachers to be certified. Our hiring, training, and supervision process, which we’ve developed and continuously improved over decades, allows us to find and hire intelligent individuals with a passion for reading and train them to deliver our curriculum effectively. Ongoing supervision and support throughout the summer ensures that our teachers succeed.
Although we do not require teaching certification, we do require all of our teachers to complete an undergraduate degree in any discipline before they teach our summer programs. The parents of our students expect that their summer reading teacher will have a strong academic background with a bachelor’s degree at minimum, in addition to a love of books and reading.
Why do you require a 3.0 GPA to teach for the Institute?
The parents of our students and our partner institutions expect Institute teachers to have strong academic backgrounds. Our educational partners want to be sure that they are offering high-quality programs led by skilled teachers to the families in their communities. We always keep in mind that we must uphold the reputations of our partner institutions, as well as our own, in all of our work.
The teachers we hire learn and retain a lot of information about reading development and our curriculum in a short amount of time. Our comprehensive teacher training program involves intensive reading, independent study, and modeling lessons. We find that previous academic performance is a strong indicator of whether or not a teacher will succeed in training, and then go on to do well in the classroom.
What is a typical teaching schedule like?
We schedule our classes for days and times that work best for most families. Weekends work well for many families, so Saturdays and Sundays are very popular days for our classes. If hired, you should expect to teach on Saturdays and Sundays.
Our summer reading teachers work full-time (37-42 hours per week), typically teaching 13 or 14 classes distributed over 4-5 days per week. Your work week will include teaching online classes, teaching in-person classes, lesson preparation, data entry, corresponding with and meeting with parents and students, ongoing professional development, and meeting with your supervisor. You will have at least 2 days off each week.
Our teachers work with all age groups, from 4-year-olds through adults.
How will you prepare me to teach different age groups?
We train Institute instructors to teach all of our programs, rather than having them specialize in just a few grade levels. We hire people with the range of skills necessary to teach students of all ages and we set them up to succeed. Our comprehensive, paid training program will give you the knowledge and tools you need to effectively teach reading skills to all students.
During training you’ll learn our complete curriculum plus age-appropriate teaching techniques and classroom management strategies.
What if I have a conflict with the listed training or teaching dates?
Training: In order to teach classes this summer you would need to complete the entire training program. With that said, we are as flexible as we can be in working around training conflicts, and trainees can make up some missed training independently. We encourage you to apply and be thorough about detailing conflicts with the training schedule while filling out the application.
Teaching: We are looking for reliable teachers who will be there for students and their parents. Our educational partners and the families enrolled in our programs expect consistency of instruction. During each teaching term, students only see their reading teacher once per week for five weeks. Establishing a great relationship with students in a short amount of time requires teachers to be present. The more familiar students are with their teacher, the more motivated they will be to do their work in class.
If you have conflicts with the summer teaching dates, you may still apply for a position, but understand that our teaching positions are a full-time summer commitment, and we aren’t always able to accommodate teachers’ other obligations.
What happens after the summer?
Our summer teaching positions are seasonal. Many of our teachers use their summer experience with the Institute as a bridge to another employment opportunity in the fall. Others find that the seasonal nature of the job fits into their current situation quite well and decide to come back summer after summer.
Successful summer teachers may also be invited to continue teaching other online programs during the school year. Other people move on to full-time employment with the Institute in teacher supervision, operations, or elsewhere. To learn more about our organization, click here.
The best way to see if working for the Institute is the right fit for you is to teach for us.
What is the application deadline?
We are already interviewing teaching candidates, so please submit your application as soon as possible. We will continue reviewing applications until we fill all available teaching positions. Submit your application today for the best chance of being considered.
