Teacher Training

Training for new Institute of Reading Development teachers starts with a full-day orientation held in April or early May. Full-time training begins a few weeks later and consists of two phases of distance training and one phase of in-person training.

During phases of distance training, instructors study Institute curriculum through an organized program of guided study. Each trainee receives a set of training materials and a daily schedule for completing structured study units. Supervisors support and guide trainees through each day of distance training by leading conference call discussions, holding office hours, and conducting quizzes that reinforce key elements of effective instruction. Please note: this is not an independent study program. Trainees must be free of other academic or professional obligations during scheduled training days.

Trainees attend in-person training at one of seven locations throughout the country. The Institute provides travel and accommodations, if necessary. In-person training gives trainees the opportunity to practice teaching the Institute's curriculum with the modeling, coaching, and mentorship of their trainer. Trainees practice lecturing, leading discussions, and effective classroom management strategies.

When I started teaching, I felt supported and prepared. Each day I could enter the classroom with confidence, teach lessons, interact with students, communicate with parents and act as an authority figure.
