Teaching Schedule & Responsibilities
The summer reading programs meet once per week for five consecutive weeks. The summer teaching season consists of two terms taught back to back, so teachers are in the classroom for ten weeks total. Institute of Reading Development teachers can expect to:
- Teach 10-12 classes, each meeting once per week, per term.
- Work with a mix of age levels.
- Teach either 4 or 5 days per week, including both weekend days and 1-2 evenings during the week.
- Spend time reviewing each week’s lesson plans and books.
- Enter key student data online each week.
- Drive to a different teaching site each day of the work week.
- Distribute take-home materials to students during the first week of the each term, and bring in-class reading materials for students each week of the term.
- Participate in a weekly individual telephone meeting with their supervisor.

I've had to push myself harder mentally and physically than I ever have in any job, but I have also felt more gratification from this 10-week employment than I have from any other job I've ever held.
