Parent Education & Support
Parents enroll their children in these programs for a variety of reasons. These reasons range from supporting struggling readers to challenging strong readers to preparing students for the upcoming school year. What all parents have in common is concern for their children and the desire to see them succeed as readers. The Institute of Reading Development strives to provide both parents and students with the education and support they need to achieve that success.
The parent education component of the curriculum helps each parent understand the specific developmental needs of his or her child, as well as the skills and habits all children must develop to progress as readers. All readers must move through the same stages of reading development. However, each child progresses at his or her own pace. This means that an individual child may appear to be either ahead of or behind his or her peers. Parents often worry about these comparisons. One of the greatest services the Institute provides parents is the reassurance that, with the right kind of support, each child will progress naturally and confidently toward independent reading and, later, to absorption in great works of literature.
At all program levels, parents receive materials that are an important resource for them both during and after the program. These materials include a complete Program Guide, companion DVD, and an age–appropriate booklist. The Program Guide outlines and describes all the skills taught in class and all homework sessions. During the course, teachers actively seek to address parent concerns and make themselves available to answer questions. Teachers give parents specific feedback on their children's participation and progress in the program as well as the best ways to support their children's reading practice at home. This means that parents leave the program with a clear picture of how to use the materials and skills to provide ongoing support for their children's reading development.
