The Institute of Reading Development is contracted by universities, colleges, school districts, and municipalities, to teach reading programs for students from 4 years old through adulthood. The Institute's mission is to instill a passion for reading in students of all ages by leading them to the experience of absorption and identification in imaginative literature. Our curriculum integrates skill development with an emphasis on independent reading.
The Institute was founded in 1970 by Paul Copperman, the author of The Literacy Hoax and Taking Books to Heart: How to Develop a Love of Reading in Your Child. Paul graduated Phi Beta Kappa in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, and received a M.Ed. from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco. He was appointed by President Reagan and confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as a Member of the National Council on Educational Research.
The Institute of Reading Development is not affiliated with any religious or political organization and provides services in 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Who We Are Looking For
I really believe in the work the Institute is doing - that is, I really believe that building a strong, positive relationship with books is one of the most important things a child can do, and so I was grateful for this opportunity to really get out there and make a difference.
— Christian, Institute instructor in Los Angeles & PhD Candidate in English Literature
